HISTORY:

This Shivastalam is located in the Tiruppaambani area of the town of Mannargudi, home to the famous Rajagopala temple and is also known as Paataalam (as in the hymns of Sambandar).

Aadi Seshan is said to have worshipped here, hence the names Paambani for the shrine, and Sarpapureeswarar for Shiva. Dhananjaya munivar whose form resembled that of Patanjali is also believed to have worshipped here. The river in the vicinity is also known as Paambani.

SALIENT FEATURE:

·        This temple with 2 prakarams has an artistically decorated sanctum, and a few other mandapams in its premises.

·        Inscriptions from the period of Rajaraja Chola I, and Rajaraja Chola III, and Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan are seen here.

BELIEF:

People pray to divine serpent adisesha by lighting ghee lamps for relief from adverse aspects of serpent planets as rahu and ketu and those under kalasarpa dosha. Those belonging to Simha, Kumba, Danus, Mesha and Viruchika signs pray to Lord Simha Dakshinamurthi for peaceful life.
