HISTORY:

This Shivastalam is located 9 km southeast of Tiruvarur and is a maadakkovil built at an elevation. Saattiyakkudi, a shrine to the Northeast of this temple has been sung by the Tiruvisaippaa.

A black sparrow (Valiyan) is said to have circumambulated the shrine, hence the name Valivalam. Surya is said to have worshipped here and the wheels of his chariot are believed to have created the Chakra Theertham moat. 

SALIENT FEATURE:

·        This temple with 3 prakarams occupies an area of 1.8 acres, and has an 85 feet tall Rajagopuram.

·        The sanctum is a monolithic structure.

·        Traces of a moat and grand walls remain in this temple.

·        Ambal's shrine is located in the outermost prakaram.

·        Ekachakra Perumal has a shrine here.
