HISTORY:
Ambal
Brahmapureeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple located
at Ambal in Tiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu, India. Now the place is known as Koilpatthu. The
presiding deity is Shiva. He is called as Brahmapureeswarar. His consort is
known as Poonkuzhalammai. The historical name of the place is
Punnakavanam. Shiva is worshipped as Brahmapureeswarar and his
consort Parvathi as
Poonguzhalammai. The temple is believed to be the last among the 70 maadakoil built
by Kochengat Chola.
This
Shivastalam is located near Poonthottam on the Peralam Tiruvarur railway line.
This is a grand temple just a kilometer away from yet another Shivastalam Ambar Maakalam in
the same town, associated with the legend of Somaasi Maaranar's yagna, which
was attended by Tyagarajar (Shiva). (The image above is that of

A
Somaskanda panel adorns the sanctum behind the Shivalingam. Six worship
services are offered each day here.The temple is about 2000 years old. There is
a Vishnu temple nearby and an image of Kali within its precincts.
Lord Brahma:
Brahma,
one of the trinities in Hindu mythology, worshipped Shiva in the temple to regain his original form. He
was earlier cursed by Shiva to be a swan. Brahma is believed to been
propitiated from his curse, after have taken a holy dip in Annam Poigai, the
temple tank, before worshipping Shiva.
Lord Vinayaga:
Lord Vinayaga in the temple is known as Patikkacupu Pillayar as he is believed to have offered a padi (a measuring tool) to the ruling king of the region named Nantan during a famine. The deity is also believed to have been worshiped by Manmatha, the cupid.
SALIENT
FEATURE:

This sivasthalam
temple is one of the oldest and one among the 70 Maadakovils built by Ko
Chenkat Cholan.

The shrine of
presiding male deity is facing east and that of presiding female deity is
facing south.
·
Manmadhan is
said to have worshipped in this sthalam.
·
There is a
shrine for Vinayakar who is known as Padikkasu Pulliar.
·
Other shrines
are for Paathaleswarar on the north side and Punnagavareswarar under the Punnai
tree.
·
The temple has a
three-tiered rajagopuram, the entrance tower and all the shrines are
enclosed in rectangular walls.

Tiruvarur. Another paadal petra sivasthalam Ambar
Maakaalam is situated 1 Km from here on the west direction.
